Description
As the largest cancer research site in Australia, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is leading the ever-accelerating advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment. From humble beginnings 60 years ago, to recognition today as one of the world's leading and most progressive specialist cancer centres, Peter Mac has an unequalled depth and breadth of research expertise and experience.

Significance
Fundamental to their identity is the fusion of an integrated research environment within a clinical setting. Working in an integrated environment delivers unique opportunities for medical advances to be developed and tested, and for clinically oriented questions to guide the research agenda. This has a profound effect on the understanding of cancer biology, leading to more effective and individualised patient care, in effect, research from 'bench to bedside' and back again.

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre has 25 research laboratories which are focused on a full spectrum of research programs, from fundamental studies on cancer cell growth to major national and international clinical trials of the newest cancer therapies. Their basic and translational research programs are supported by core facilities and platform technologies that ensure researchers work with the latest equipment and expertise needed to facilitate their research and translate it to the clinic. Peter Mac’s clinical research encompasses a broad range of interest and expertise that complements its activities in the basic and translational arenas.

What’s Open?
The tour of the laboratories will provide the opportunity to learn about some of the research achievements and technical advances that support Peter Mac’s researchers as they strive for one goal – the fight against cancer.

Melbourne Open House is fortunate to be able to offer groups the chance to be escorted into the Biomedical Research Laboratories, where you will be given a brief overview of the wonderful work the team undertakes at Peter Mac as you move through the laboratories to view examples of research activities.

Melbourne Open House is a free event and we hope that you will be able to show your support through making a donation to the Peter MacCallum Foundation, whose wonderful efforts in cancer research are making a significant difference to all our lives. Peter Mac donation buckets will be at many of the Open House venues.
